Sons of Soil in Maharashta

by - 06/22/2009

"Sons of Soil"

With state elections approaching, the Maharashtra state government seems to have awakened to "Sons of Soil" aroma. The same thing was considered down market and not to be noted issue. Thanks to the current political turmoil and unprecedented results to new political parties in the recently concluded National Elections, the sick Congress-NCP alliance has suddenly feeling for the "Marathi Manoos".

Recently, the Maharashtra Government has announced 80% reservation in government jobs for "Sons of Soil" (citizens domiciled in Maharashtra having lived for the past 15 years in the state). This is at par with any hilarious comedy show, as it is easy to get a Domicile certificate from Corrupt Bureaucrats. This will definitely further add to the grievances of the locals especially the "Marathi Manoos".

The Zilla Parishad issues Domicile Certificates and is responsible for ensuring locals getting employed in the Vicinity of their residence. In the current year out of 80,000 applicants only 4 got a job from the Nasik Zilla Parishad.

Its a shame on the Maharashtra State govt. as it lost a golden opportunity to create more jobs in Maharashtra with the NANO CAR project. TATA group which has a very big presence in Pune, with TATA MOTORS unit, still preferred Gujrat as a better destination over Maharashtra.

Most states in India have strict rules (which are also implemented) for the setting up industries in the respective states. The state government also offers many incentives, sops, tax benefits etc for setting up industries, while abiding to the rule of recruiting locals only. This has never happened in Maharashtra and what we see is 90% employees are non-locals.
